When I first started aquascaping, the range of tools available was tiny—and anything I could find was super expensive. So I kept things simple and made do with what I had. Over time, I realized that you don't actually need a massive collection of gear to maintain a healthy, beautiful aquascape. Here's what I use:
Long tweezers and long scissors – These are the two tools I reach for the most. The tweezers make planting and repositioning easy, while the scissors are perfect for trimming stems and maintaining shape.
Bent tweezers – I own them, but honestly, they rarely see any action.
Back when tools were harder to come by, I had to improvise. My go-to hack? A chopstick. I still use it sometimes for raking gravel in tight spots where my hand just won't work. Simple, effective, and free.
Other than the basics, here's what I keep around: Slim gravel vacuum, Turkey baster (great for spot-cleaning debris), Glass scourer and toothbrush (algae patrol!), Net, Water change jug that works a bit like a colander.
And that's it! Nothing fancy, just practical tools that get the job done.
I'd love to hear what other aquascapers are using. Do you keep it minimal like me, or do you go all-in with the full toolset? Drop a comment and share your must-have items!
